Start your Outdoor Garden
Limited Capacity filling up

The focus of today’s session is to talk about the wonderful success of school gardens happening across the country. How are students are using these outdoor spaces? Discover ideas to make the most of your space. We will chat about some of the challenges around having a school garden and what school communities have done to overcome their challenges.

The Nutrient for Life Foundation Canada is a registered charitable organization that produces and distributes educational materials on agricultural sustainability and soil science. Our flagship program is our learning garden program, which helps fund schools across the country to start or update their current school garden. We currently have over 100 school gardens from Newfoundland to British Columbia. We love working with like-minded organizations like Little Green Thumbs to help teachers and students better understand food production from the ground up.

What Stories Live In Your Garden?
Limited Capacity filling up

Walking, working and playing in nature invites children’s imaginations to create stories that reflect their lived experiences, their wonders, and their understandings of the world around them. In this session we will explore the stories school gardens have to tell and how we can leverage loose parts to ignite imaginative and creative storytelling that is inclusive and successful for all learners.

Bokashi Composting
Limited Capacity seats available

The Bokashi method has many advantages for school-based composting.  Bokashicycle uses nature's power of fermentation in an aerobic environment which means sealed containers.  Therefore, no fruit flies and no smell.  Any edible matter can go into the pail, even meat, cheese, bones, confections, and non-edibles like dryer lint and coffee grounds.  No staff supervised pre-sorting of what goes into the container is needed.  After the contents of the bucket have completed their fermentation in as little as 2 weeks, the Bokashi, or fermented organic matter, can be buried.  Done.

The Bokashi composting program in our school and school division has been running smoothly for 18 months.  Bokashi - so easy!!

The Art and Science of Observation
Limited Capacity seats available

School gardening is exciting! Sometimes though, we can get a little... ahead of ourselves in the excitement. Many of the biggest problems in school gardening arise simply due to not paying attention- to the climate, the land, the water cycle, the culture and the community in which it’s located- and to the unique interests and abilities of the teachers and students involved. This hands-on session is focused on embracing 'problems as solutions,' through the rewarding practice of intentional observation during the design, implementation, and establishment of a school garden.

We will practice blending traditional and tech-based methods of observation that students and educators can rely on while setting up a school garden which is sustainable, successful, and vital to the school and wider community.

Observation is a vital skill for success in all subjects, both in and out of the classroom. The garden can be an ideal starting place for learning and seeing the valuable results of observation in a fun and practical way!
